What is a well woman health exam?
A well woman health exam focuses on your reproductive health. During a routine exam, many different procedures may take place. This depends upon your age, sexual history, medical history, and health concerns. Generally, a well woman exam will always include a Pap smear and breast exam.
It is important for every woman to keep up with regular well woman health exams. Well woman exams are imperative to your overall health. A well woman health exam will go over any and all reproductive concerns you may have. What is a Pap smear?
A Pap smear is a test performed on a sample of cells from the cervix. These cells are screened for abnormalities related to cervical cancer. If abnormalities appear, further testing may be required.
What is cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer occurs when a malignant tumor is present in the lowermost part of the cervix. Precancerous cells develop, over time, into cervical cancer. However, it is important to note that not all precancerous cells will evolve into cervical cancer. Additionally, cervical cancer is very treatable if detected early. Therefore, regular screenings and early detection are key.
What is a breast exam?
Breast exams are manual exams performed for early detection of breast cancer or any abnormalities. In addition to your provider performing one during your well woman exam, it is highly recommended to perform monthly self breast exams, feeling for any lumps or swelling. If your provider finds any lumps or abnormalities, a biopsy or further testing may be required.
What should you expect during your well woman exam?
In addition to your Pap smear and breast exam, blood tests may be ordered. Your provider will go over your medical and sexual history. Depending upon your sexual history, STI tests may be recommended. Your weight, height, and blood pressure will be checked. Your provider will go over sexual education, health risks, and birth control, including IUD insertion and removal. This is also an ideal time to address any reproductive health concerns you may have.
What is an IUD?
An IUD, also known as an intrauterine device, is a form of birth control. It is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Whether you want to have your device removed due to family planning or adverse side effects, our providers can quickly and easily remove it. Additionally, we can educate you on your birth control options. If an IUD seems like the best choice, administer one for you.
