What is chronic disease management?

Proper chronic disease management is vital to your overall health and quality of life. If you are living with a chronic disease it’s important to educate yourself on your chronic illness and regularly follow up with your provider. At B You Body and Skin Care Solutions, some of the chronic diseases we treat are: hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

What is hypertension?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is caused by blood being forced against the artery walls. High blood pressure can exist for several years without any symptoms showing. However, over time, high blood pressure can cause health problems. One of the most common is heart disease. It’s important to monitor your blood pressure yourself and with your provider. Additionally, it’s imperative that you follow any medical advice given by your provider to lower your blood pressure.

What is heart disease?

Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is a general term for many different heart conditions. It is caused by plaque buildup within the artery. The buildup of plaque prevents proper blood flow, clogging the arteries. When blood cannot flow properly, blood clots form. Blood clots can cause a stroke or heart attack. It is important to have any heart concerns and conditions properly diagnosed, monitored, and treated by a medical professional. Your provider may recommend lifestyle changes, medications, or even surgery.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes occurs when there is too much glucose in the bloodstream. There are different types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational. Gestational diabetes is temporary and occurs during pregnancy.

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes presents when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. In order to properly manage type 1 diabetes, your doctor will prescribe insulin and offer diet and lifestyle suggestions. Type 2 diabetes affects the way the body processes glucose. The body doesn’t use the insulin properly. It is the most common form of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes may be treated by insulin therapy, diet changes, and exercise plans. If insulin isn’t taken and diabetes isn’t properly managed, more serious medical problems can arise.

What is obesity care?

Obesity occurs when a person’s body mass index is 30 or greater. It is generally caused by an excessive amount of body fat. If obesity isn’t properly managed, it can lead to more serious health problems. These include: high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer. The main goal of obesity care is to reach and maintain a healthy goal weight. Your provider may implement many different strategies to reach this goal. These include: diet and exercise plans, lifestyle changes, medications, behavior changes, and counseling. Your provider will also carefully monitor your progress to make sure you are healthy and everything is running smoothly.
